Tattoo Aftercare Using Recovery Derm Shield: Essential Tips for Optimal Healing

Keeping Recovery Derm Shield On

✅ Leave the Derm Shield On for 1-5 Days:

• Recovery Derm Shield is specially designed to stay on for up to five days. This gives your tattoo a safe environment to heal.

• It works as a barrier against bacteria, dirt, and friction while allowing oxygen to flow through. This promotes optimal healing for your new tattoo.

When to Remove the Derm Shield Early

  1. Plasma or Excess Moisture Escapes the Bandage:

    • If you spot plasma, ink, or moisture leaking from the edges, it means the seal has been compromised.

Action: Remove the derm shield immediately to protect against bacteria.

  2. Visible Lifting or Peeling:

    • If you see the edges of the derm shield lifting or peeling, it’s no longer effective.

Action: Remove the derm shield and switch to traditional aftercare.

  3. Skin Irritation or Allergic Reaction:

    • Redness, itching, burning, or any irritation indicates a possible allergic reaction to the adhesive.

Action: Remove the derm shield and transition to your regular aftercare routine.

How to Remove Recovery Derm Shield Safely

  1. Use Warm Running Water:

    • Always remove the derm shield under warm running water. This helps loosen the adhesive and minimizes discomfort.

  2. Peel Slowly in the Direction of Hair Growth:

    • Gently peel from the edges, pulling in the direction of hair growth.

    • Avoid pulling at sharp angles to keep irritation to a minimum.

Post-Derm Shield Care (After Removal)

  1. Wash the Tattoo Gently:

    • Clean your tattoo with lukewarm water and a non-scented, non-medicated antibacterial soap. Some good options are:

    • Dial Antibacterial Soap (Fragrance-Free)

    • Dr. Bronner’s Baby Unscented Soap or any mild antibacterial soap free from fragrances or additives.

    • • Use your fingertips to gently clean the area, removing plasma, ink residue, and bacteria.
      • Rinse thoroughly to ensure no soap residue remains.

  2. Pat Dry with a Clean Paper Towel:

    • Gently pat your tattoo dry using a clean, lint-free paper towel. Avoid regular towels or anything abrasive to prevent irritation.

Moisturizing and Protecting the Tattoo

  1. Apply a Non-Scented, Non-Medicated Water-Based Lotion:

    • Once your tattoo is fully dry, apply a thin layer of a non-scented, non-medicated, water-based lotion. This keeps your skin hydrated.

    • Recommended lotions include:

    • Eucerin Original Healing Lotion

    • Lubriderm Daily Moisture (Fragrance-Free)

    • Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion (Fragrance-Free)

  2. Moisturize 2-3 Times Daily:

    • Apply lotion 2-3 times daily for 2-3 weeks or until your tattoo is completely healed.

    • Be careful not to over-moisturize, as this can clog pores and prolong the healing process.

Optional Use of Aquaphor for Dry Skin or Cold Weather

Aquaphor as a Protective Layer:

• Aquaphor Healing Ointment (Fragrance-Free) can be an optional protective layer in specific conditions:

- Cold, Dry Weather: When exposed to harsh, dry conditions, Aquaphor prevents cracking and excessive dryness.

- Extremely Dry Skin: If you notice excessive dryness after removing the derm shield, apply a thin layer of Aquaphor only when necessary.

⚠️ Use Aquaphor Sparingly:

• Apply Aquaphor lightly to avoid clogging pores and to allow your skin to breathe.

• Avoid using it as your primary moisturizer—only use it as needed in dry or cold conditions.

Continue Moisturizing for 2-3 Weeks

• Keep using a water-based, non-scented lotion for 2-3 weeks after removing the derm shield. This ensures proper healing and keeps your tattoo vibrant.

Long-Term Tattoo Care Tips

Protect from Sun Exposure:

• After your tattoo has fully healed, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) when exposing your tattoo to sunlight.

• UV rays can cause fading, so avoid direct sun exposure during the first month.

Avoid Prolonged Soaking:

• Stay away from soaking in water—such as swimming pools, hot tubs, or baths—for at least 2-3 weeks after removing the derm shield.

Hydrate Regularly:

• Keep your tattoo moisturized to maintain its vibrancy and prevent premature fading.

Signs of Proper Healing

Days 1-3: You might notice slight redness, swelling, and plasma discharge under the derm shield.

Days 4-7: Peeling and light itching may occur after removing the derm shield. Continue moisturizing during this stage.

Weeks 2-3: The tattoo should settle over these weeks, with colors becoming vibrant.

By following these steps consistently, you can help ensure your tattoo heals effectively. This will maintain its sharpness and detail for years to come. Remember to prioritize aftercare, and your tattoo will retain its beauty. If you have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out!
